I'm in San Diego for the third in a series of continuing professional education series my agency puts on each summer. Unless you are traveling on Air Force One or with a Cabinet secretary, Federal Flacks travel commercial, often in the middle seats that airlines reserve for thoae traveling on "government rate."
Most of my travel is to provide communications support to senior executives giving speeches or making public appearances, such as site visits or meetings with other government officials.
Communications support covers a multiitude of duties, depending on the executive and event. The most important component is making sure the official being supported has everything he/she needs. That can range from fast fact checking to wholesale rewriting; from getting diet sodas to asking for directions.
Site visits are always fun. I've organized tours of Super Fund sites and candy factories, celebrations and field hearings.
This summer's mission: staff 12 presentations in six different cities over a 10 week period. This involves identifying local staff who will assist in answering questions after each presentation, registering the executive and staff for the seminar program, updating the presentation as needed, and, most importantly, ensuring that the a/v staff has the proper presentation loaded in the correct order.
For additional information event planning, check out my recent previous blog post on that subject.
An upcoming post will discuss the advising management component of the Federal Flack's job.
Next stop: Las Vegas, scene of the downfall of the GSA!
